A Higher-Quality Process to Traditional Data Governance

More and more, I’m finding our clients are struggling with the traditional approach to Data Governance. For that reason, I’ve been excited to learn more about Adaptive Data Governance. This approach combines automation, Agile principles, and a more client-friendly approach to deliver a higher-quality process.

Adaptive Data Governance is a modern approach to Data Governance that is becoming increasingly popular among organizations undergoing digital transformation. According to Gartner, ‘Adaptive [Data] Governance is a flexible, responsive approach to Data Governance that allows organizations to be more agile in their use of data while still ensuring compliance and data quality.’ Rather than being a static set of rules, this approach creates a governance framework that can evolve as the organization and its data ecosystem change.

Additional Key Elements

One of the key elements is continuous monitoring. As Forrester states, ‘Adaptive Governance requires continuous monitoring of the organization’s data ecosystem, including data sources, data flow, and data usage, in order to identify potential issues and risks.’ Automated enforcement is also an important aspect. Governance policies are automatically enforced through technology, like data quality rules and access controls.

Adaptive Governance is particularly well-suited to organizations undergoing digital transformation, as it allows them to quickly adapt to changing business needs and regulations while ensuring compliance and data quality.

This approach also emphasizes Data Stewardship and collaboration. As Gartner puts it, ‘Adaptive Governance empowers individuals and teams to take ownership of their data and be responsible for its quality, accuracy, and compliance. This empowers them to make decisions and take actions on data, which enables a more flexible and responsive approach to data governance.’ The traditional view of Data Governance puts these two things in separate corners. Merging them together not only helps with enforcement by building buy-in from the client but also helps educate the Data Governance lead on the needs of the business. The best Data Governance Leads view their role as being about engagement, so this can only help.

Adaptive Data Governance allows organizations to be more agile in their use of data. Organizations can be better equipped to take advantage of new technologies, such as AI and machine learning.
